Using the extensive, industry-wide data compiled by the PMI and PwC, we’ve produced a tool to assess your PMO maturity that also identifies and measures the business value of improvements you can make.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) has teamed up with PwC to conduct a survey of over 4,000 project management professionals, and they’ve used this objective, industry-wide data set to produce their Global PMO Maturity Index

The Global PMO Maturity Index

It asked a cross section of industry professionals about a range of 23 activities to see how often they were performed throughout their organization. These activities are situated within five areas, each of which is associated with value creation, namely:

  • Governance
  • Integration and Alignment
  • Processes
  • Technology and Data
  • People

The more often those 23 activities were performed, the higher the score and the greater their PMO maturity.

 The Top 10% of PMOs

From this index, they were able to identify a clear cohort that represented the top 10% of PMOs. This group of high-performing PMOs were able to ensure their organizations coped far more successfully with disruptions to the supply chain, while ensuring that they continue to lead the way in the industries where they operate.

We’ve taken that objective and extensive, industry-wide data and used it as the basis for our Business Value Assessment (BVA) tool.

The Cora Business Value Assessment (BVA) Tool

We take the baseline information you provide us with around your projects, in terms of tasks, deadlines and delivery dates, so we can assess how those projects are being run and managed across the different business units throughout your organisation.

We then gather a number of data points in relation to activities and operations so we can build ‘pain chains’ to get a deeper understanding into your pain points. Whether that’s around customer service, internal communications or unforeseen increases to project costs.

Crucially, we can then track back to see why these things are happening and what it is that’s causing them. So you can take action to mitigate whatever the issue is, and get valuable insight around preventing it from happening again in the future.

We then feed all that data into the Cora Business Value Assessment (BVA) tool which has been constructed using the same structures used for the PMI’s PMO Maturity Index. This allows us to compare the data from your organization with the benchmarks from that index, in terms of industry averages versus the scores achieved by the top 10%.

This gives you a tangible understanding of where your PMO maturity is, compared to where it could and should be.

A BVA Case Study

At the recent Global PMI Summit 2024, in Berlin, we presented an anonymized case study to illustrate how useful this is. This company has around 60,000 employees working on 9,000 projects in a portfolio worth $2.73 billion.

We broke that portfolio down into 7 groups of different sizes and analysed its different benchmark metrics in terms of project and portfolio management best practices. Analysing everything from resource management, scenario comparisons and risk assessment to internal training, project and program delivery and budgets.

Crucially, we were able to use those PMI structures to assign a value to each of those metrics, which allowed that company to home in on exactly which areas they needed to focus on to improve their outcomes.

In their case, the four areas around R&D, Supply Chain, Facilities & Capital Projects and Engineering all had similar profiles, but Services clearly showed that this was the area where they needed to make improvements. And we were able to then put a value on the outcomes that those improvements would produce.

Assess Your PMO Maturity

Our BVA tool allows you to assess where your organization is in terms of its PMO maturity. It’s a service that’s completely free and entirely customer driven. It will take you just a couple of hours to complete, and can be done by you over as long as you need, whether that’s over a few days or weeks, or over a few months.

Once you send that baseline information back to us, we’ll be able to provide you with a PMO maturity assessment, and you can begin the process of making those improvements, and benefiting from the results that follow.
